Hi! I’m Sarah May, PhD,
owner of Pipette & Quill.
I’ve been working as a professional scientific writer since 2022 but have spent many years perfecting the art of scientific communication through self-study and formal education. I love working on diverse projects that draw on my PhD training in biochemistry and biomedical sciences and my experiences writing for technical and non-technical audiences.
I was inspired to pursue this career path by my own frustrations with reading and understanding scientific papers — especially those outside of my field. I wanted to learn how we as scientists could do better to communicate our work. One of the most rewarding parts of my career is being able to help scientists and trainees promote their exciting research and accomplishments.
I’m originally from Michigan but now live in Chestertown, MD, on the “Eastern Shore” with my husband Dan, who is an assistant professor of chemistry at Washington College. When I’m not working, you will find me enjoying nature, birdwatching, snapping photos, traveling the U.S., or doing one of many creative hobbies!
Interested in pursuing science communication? I’m always happy to chat about my experiences!
